Embark on an exhilarating adventure at Lee Quarry

Embark on an exhilarating adventure through the fascinating histories of Lee Quarry and Cragg Quarry, rooted in Rossendale’s industrious past.
Lee Quarry: Once a bustling hub of activity from the early 19th century, Lee Quarry, nestled on the hillside above Bacup, Lancashire, played a significant role in the local economy.

Over time, the quarry ceased operations and has since been transformed into a premier mountain bike trail centre. Developed by Lancashire County Council, the trails include red and black routes, making it a popular destination for mountain bikers.

Cragg Quarry: Located above Waterfoot, Cragg Quarry also boasts a rich history. As a major supplier of Haslingden flagstones, used in landmarks like Trafalgar Square in London, it has been repurposed into a haven for walkers and mountain bikers. The Friends of Valley of Stone, a local heritage group, spearheaded a restoration project to preserve the site’s history, making it accessible to visitors.

Adventure Awaits: Embark on an exhilarating adventure at Lee Quarry, the first purpose-built mountain bike venue in Rossendale. This former industrious quarry now serves as an oversized playground for mountain biking enthusiasts. With its rich history and rugged terrain, Lee Quarry is the perfect spot to push your limits and refine your skills.

Offering around 10 km of red and black graded trails, two pump tracks, and numerous cycle trial sections, Lee Quarry boasts short, repeatable loops ideal for honing your technique. Whether you are practicing climbs, navigating rock gardens, tackling drop-offs, soaring over jumps, or carving through huge berms, there is always room for improvement. Just remember—the rocks are unforgiving, and the site is exposed, so dress appropriately and always consider the weather. Avoid the jumps in strong winds for a safer ride.

For even more adventure, combine your ride with a trip to Cragg Quarry. This hidden gem feels more like a secret trail than a purpose-built route. Head south from Lee Quarry, following the newly constructed path across Brandwood Lower End Moor, until you reach Rooley Moor Road (part of the Mary Towneley Loop). Turn right and follow the loop for just over 1 km to discover Cragg Quarry. Here, you will find approximately 6.5 km of swooping, flowing singletrackthat winds through the spoil heaps left by Rossendale’s quarrying heritage.

From Cragg, you can either continue exploring the local bridleway network or return to Lee Quarry via Brandwood Lower End Moor. The total distance from Lee Quarry, through the moors, around Cragg, and back is about 13 km. Be prepared—these moors are home to one of the UK’s largest wind farms!
